Mavs Step Back: A New Beginning In The Dallas Mavericks' Golden Age
The same Dallas Mavericks podcast coverage you've come to know and love over the years, but now with written analysis thrown into the mix!
DALLAS – What’s up, y’all! I want to welcome you to our brand-new Mavs Step Back newsletter. When I launched the Mavs Step Back Podcast in January 2019, I never thought it would reach a point where I’d be expanding it into a writing hub as well, but here we are six years later. What started as nothing more than a “glorified hobby” has turned into a pretty cool side gig that I have been sharing with my best friend since childhood and co-host, Drew Johnson.
New Location, Same Dallas Mavericks Coverage!
After spending the last three years as the Editor-In-Chief at DallasBasketball.com, I decided to step down from that position at the end of October due to experiencing burnout. Given that I was working another full-time job besides my role at DBcom, I needed some time to rest my brain and enjoy the holidays stress-free.
I enjoyed my time at DBcom, but after years of having deadlines and (unofficial) quotas, I needed to get back to writing about the Mavs while not forcing anything. I feel like that’s when I’ve been at my best in the past, and I didn’t want to slip further into the massive aggregation mindset that most publications have embraced. So here we are… recharged and ready to bring you fun, passionate Dallas Mavericks coverage weekly!
Mavs Step Back Newsletter: What to Expect
For those who have been following along with our podcast and written content in the past, you know that we always try to mix it up and keep things fresh. We will leave most of the game-by-game analysis for our podcast (unless something big happens that also warrants our written thoughts), and our newsletter will primarily consist of individual player analysis, trade and free agency speculation based on rumors/reports and the Mavs’ needs, and much more!
And look… I’m not as trade-crazy as I used to be. Isn’t it funny how the Mavs actually being GOOD again can change that? That said, though, NBA GMs are always looking to improve their rosters, and that’s the attitude I have when it comes to looking at the trade market and trying to come up with some way the Mavs can benefit from making a move or two. <insert “eyes emoji” to accompany the pic below>

The Golden Age of Dallas Mavericks Basketball?
Although the Mavs have experienced a handful of unfortunate injuries that have held them back in the first half of this 2024-25 NBA season, one could argue that this is the best time to be a Mavs fan. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say the Mavs currently have the most talented roster, top to bottom, that they’ve ever had. A star duo of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving surrounded by high-quality role players like former star and future Hall-of-Famer Klay Thompson, PJ Washington Jr., Dereck Lively II, Daniel Gafford, Naji Marshall, Quentin Grimes, and others… is a recipe for longstanding success.
The Dirk Nowitzki era will remain king for a while due to the simple fact that it included an NBA championship. However, coming off an NBA Finals appearance in 2024, this current Mavs team has a chance to do something really special, not just this season, but for the next several years to come… that is if they can get healthy and stay healthy. Doncic being out for at least a month with a calf strain won’t help matters as the Mavs navigate the most challenging part of their schedule, but we believe this roster is built to withstand this kind of adversity. Let’s see what 2025 holds!

Mavs Standings Watch
As things currently sit here on Thursday night, January 2, the Mavs are 20-14, clinging to the No. 5 spot in the Western Conference standings while riding a three-game losing streak. Things might get worse before they get better, as the Mavs take on the league-leading Cleveland Cavaliers (29-4) at American Airlines Center on Friday night. However, if you’re looking for a bit of optimism, three of Cleveland’s four losses have come on the road. So, maybe… just maybe… there’s a chance for Dallas to end the skid despite being so shorthanded.
Mavs Step Back will be in the building, so be sure to subscribe to our newsletter below for more coverage!
